Expedition to the Livonian Coast

As we do every summer, we set off on an expedition this year to spend time with our colleagues, draw inspiration and energy, and enjoy new experiences. This time, our destination was one of the most beautiful and unique places in Latvia – the Livonian Coast, which encompasses coastal villages such as Ģipka, Melnsils, Kolka, Vaidi, Saunaga, Pitraga, Košraga, Mazirbi and others.

Stories and history of the Livonian Coast

We were accompanied by Valts Ernštreits – a Livonian linguist, interpreter, poet and director of the Livonian Institute. His passionate narration introduced us to the history, culture and significance of the Livonian people in modern-day Latvia. In Kolka, we visited the Livonian Community Centre, Kolka Lutheran Church with its contemporary altarpiece, and Kolka Cape – a place that never fails to impress with its rich history and the power of nature.

Inspiring meetings and events

In Kaltne, we heard stories about shipbuilding in the 19th century, when the local people built more than 550 sailing ships that shaped the region’s economy and culture. In the evening, during the Ancient Fire Night, we experienced an unforgettable moment – Julgī Stalte from Lībiete, together with her daughter Lelū, kicked off the Fire Night, which culminated in a fire circle and fire walking. This experience encouraged everyone to push their boundaries and feel a special sense of unity with nature and the community.

Culinary delights

During the expedition, we also got to know the special flavours of the Livonian coast. In Kaltene, we were treated to the most delicious breakfast, including watermelon salad, prepared by the chefs from "akmensstasti.lv". In Pitraga, we enjoyed the legendary smoked fish from Pitraga Andra, whilst Justs Dzedons, owner of "WildNFree" in Melnsils, treated us to venison burgers cooked over an open fire. For dessert – chanterelle-topped pizzas from Mazā Irbe in Mazirbe.

Sounds and tranquillity

The morning by the sea at the Miķeļtorņa guesthouse PIZĀ was made special by a gong meditation led by Ulla Frasere, who sings in the Livonian language and delves into the magic of sound.

The expedition to the Livonian coast was rich in experiences, offering not only relaxation and a sense of togetherness, but also a deeper understanding of Latvia’s cultural riches and people’s stories.
