On 7 September 2015, the newly built Academic Centre for Natural Sciences of the University of Latvia (LU) was opened at 1 Jelgavas Street, Torņakalns, Riga. The centre is home to approximately 1,500 students representing five faculties – Biology, Geography and Earth Sciences, Chemistry and Medicine, as well as the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences within the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.
